When designing your dream bedroom, thoughtful electrical planning is key to creating a comfortable and functional space. From the placement of power points to choosing the perfect lighting for your bedside, small details can make all the difference. In this post, we’ll share five essential electrical tips to enhance convenience, comfort, and future-proofing in your bedroom.
1 | Add a light switch at the bedside tables
If you have multiple lights in the room or you are likely to have hardwired lights at the bedside table, we always recommend having a switch for these at the bed, rather than just at the entry to the room. This can be just for the bedside lights or for all the lights in the room (on a 2-way switch). If you want to take it a step further, you can even consider adding a master switch for the whole house. That way, you can make sure all the lights are off everywhere without having to get up at all.
2 | Bedside table power points
So often I have lived in rentals that have power points that sit behind the bed. This makes them difficult to use and can also be dangerous. I would instead recommend to space them out so that they sit between the bed and bedside table. If you're likely to want to charge a lot of things at your bedside table, I also recommend adding USB ports to the middle of the power point, so you can plug in your phone or other charging cables there instead.
3 | Consider what type of lighting you need at the bed
Although experts say you shouldn't, a lot of people will use the bed for studying, and/or working as well. If you are reading or writing in bed, you'll likely need a much better light and one that actually points towards you. It's important to take this into consideration when selecting your lighting as a lot of bedside table lamps, wall lights and pendants are mostly decorative and won't be enough for this.
4 | Consider heating and cooling needs
Just as important as light and power is ensuring that the room is a comfortable temperature to sleep in. As well as a heating and cooling source, like a split system or a central system, I also like to put ceiling fans in bedrooms where possible. The fan will circulate the air around, stopping the room from feeling stuffy.
5 | Future proof the space
Lastly, consider what needs you might have in the future. Often when we plan the electrical layout of a bedroom, we might consider things like future TVs, desks or lamps. It's also not a bad idea to add a power point to the opposite corners of the room. You never know what you may need to plug in, like a humidifier or a fan (if you don't have a ceiling one).
