Designing a bespoke TV unit rather than buying one gives you the opportunity to customise the look, size and storage to suit your needs. It is a chance to step out of the box to make the centrepiece of your living room a piece that is equal parts functional and aesthetically pleasing. In this blog we explore 5 tips to consider when designing your own custom unit:
1 | Size and proportion
It's important that the TV unit is the right proportion for the space. When in doubt, it's always better to go bigger for a wow factor. We generally design custom TV units that are wall to wall, making them the focal point of the space. Another important dimension to consider is the height of the TV. We always recommend mounting it to the wall for a more elegant look, but it's important to leave enough space for it so that the TV is at eye-level when sat on the couch.
2 | Materials
The materials you select will depend on whether you would like the unit to be a feature or not. Often we include some open shelving for decor and art, and we prefer for this to be the feature, with the unit fading into the background. Alternatively, you can use contrasting and fun materials and colours to make the TV unit the feature instead. Using similar materials to those within the room or adjacent room can also make the home feel more cohesive.
3 | Storage
It's important that the TV unit has enough storage for all your needs. This includes space for your devices and consoles, as well as speakers and subwoofers, movies/shows and/or board games. If you have open shelving, consider what you want to display. A tip for speakers hidden within cabinetry is to include mesh doors in front. For consoles/devices that have a remote, you might also want to use mesh doors, or at least doors that open without getting in the way of the room. This can include using pocket doors or using 180 degree hinges on hinged doors.
4 | Conceal cables
There is nothing worse than having a beautiful unit with a wall mounted TV, and seeing all the ugly cables between them. That is why we always specify an in-wall conduit that runs from the TV to the cabinet below, allowing all cables to be hidden from view.
5 | Create a multi-purpose design
If you have the space, consider making the joinery more than just a TV unit. You may want to add a fireplace to make the space more cosy, a large bookcase or a bar nook to one end or create a window seat attached to the unit.
