I actually really enjoy folding laundry but I have a feeling I am in the minority… so if like most people, you don't love doing laundry, having a functional space for it can really take some of the hustle out of the chore. If you are planning to renovate your Laundry room and you are looking for some ideas to make it functional no matter how small your space is, then this blog post is for you!
These are my top 5 must haves for any laundry,
1 | Pull out hampers
Pull out hampers allow you to keep your dirty laundry hidden, tucked away and still accessible when you need it. I would recommend to select a hamper mechanism with at least 2 compartments so you can sort out the laundry as you put it in the hamper. Another option is to simply add two large drawers to your joinery which can be used in the same way. And remember to design your laundry so that the hampers are as close as possible to your washing machine to make it super practical!
2 | Clothes drying
If you prefer not to use a dryer but are sick of seeing your clothes air drying inside the house taking up space in random rooms, you should consider adding a drying space within your laundry. There are so many different options available so you can always find the right fit for your space. Some of my favourites are,
Adding a rail under your overhead cupboards
A wall mounted rack that folds down/up
A retractable clothesline that takes up only a small amount of space once retracted
A drying cupboard with pull out drying racks inside
3 | Bench space
This might sound like an obvious one, but it's often hard to fit bench space into a small laundry. If you don't have a lot of room, I would suggest to add a cover over the sink so that you can turn it into usable bench. If you are having a stone benchtop, your stone mason may even be able to create a cover from any left over stone.
4 | Broom cupboard
Having a tall cupboard is always helpful to store things like ironing boards, brooms, vacuums and mops. I would recommend to optimise this space by adding hooks inside so that you can hang things neatly. If the cupboard is fairly tall you can also add in some adjustable shelving. This allows you to add, remove and adjust the shelves to suit the height of the things inside and make the most of the space. With more and more people now having a stick vacuum and/or a handheld vacuum, it is also a great idea to add a power point inside this cupboard so that you can charge your vacuum whilst keeping it out of the way.
5 | Lighting
Having a good amount of lighting is always important, but especially for a laundry where you will be folding and ironing clothes. Natural light is always a game changer so if you have a small window or no window but you have an external door, I would suggest to go with a full-lite door which is a door with a large window in the middle. Another great idea if you need more light above your bench top is to add LED strip lights, which can be integrated into the bottom of your overhead cupboards.
