Create a calming home with these 5 Japandi-style ideas

If you've never heard of the word Japandi, this is an interior design style that combines Japanese minimalism and Scandinavian simplicity, blending the best of both styles to create a serene and balanced aesthetic. It is a design style that feels calming yet cosy - the perfect space to escape the hustle and bustle of the outside world. Whether you'd like to transform your bathroom, lounge or your entire home with this aesthetic, here are 5 key elements to keep in mind:

1 | Stick to earthy and neutral tones

Japandi interiors generally feature a lot of soft neutrals, like white, grey or beige. However, you can create contrast and interest through pops of black in tapware, decor or furniture. You can also use muted or pastel tones of your favourite colours to add a bit more personality to your spaces, without the colour being too overwhelming in the otherwise neutral interior.

2 | Use natural materials

My favourite part of the Japandi style is the use of natural materials. Even though the overall palette is quite neutral and muted, it is the addition of natural materials like timbers, rattan, fabrics, concrete and stone throughout that adds the wow factor for me. I love to layer natural materials of different textures to create interest, and this can be done in so many ways. You can do this in a lounge or bedroom using different fabrics, and in a bathroom or kitchen by combining interesting tiles with textured cabinetry finishes.

3 | Focus on functionality

Functionality is a must in any home that I design, but it is particularly important in a Japandi style interior.  When looking at furniture, select pieces that are well-crafted, versatile, and designed to serve multiple purposes. When designing a kitchen or bathroom, pay attention to the functionality of the layout and the cabinetry design and select high quality finishes and fixtures.

4 | Keep it simple

Japandi design embraces simplicity and minimalism, focusing on clean lines, uncluttered spaces, and a sense of openness. It is important to select simple forms without much ornamentation in things like furniture, tapware, decor and cabinetry. You can again focus on bringing in interesting natural materials like timber and rattan to add interest instead. It is also a good idea to select only a few main pieces and not overdo the decor. Lastly, storage is a must in order to keep the open feel of an uncluttered space. Adding custom joinery to your spaces that allows you to have a spot for everything will help you to achieve this.

5 | Maximise natural light

Japandi design emphasizes the importance of natural light, and generally features large windows and views to the outdoors. Light, airy spaces help to create a sense of openness and emphasise the connection to the surrounding environment. If you're unable to change your windows, aim to have window furnishings that do not obstruct your windows when open. For example, timber shutters are very popular but tend to obstruct your view even when open. You can also look into skylights as a way to bring more natural light into the home.
