Why longevity should be on top of your mind when renovating or building

In today’s renovation world, it’s easy to get swept up in the ever-turning cycle of trends. Between glossy TV reveals, Instagram-worthy homes and the pressure to keep up with “what’s in,” decisions can end up being made quickly and without much thought — often at the cost of quality, function and long-term joy. By slowing down the process and choosing quality, you’re not only designing a space that will age beautifully, you’re designing with heart, with integrity, and with your future self in mind.
Trends vs timeless design
We've all heard of 'fast fashion' and how damaging it is to our environment. However, as shows like The Block continue to be very popular, I'm also seeing the rise of 'fast interiors'. This often leads to selections for homes being made with little consideration beyond the cost and wanting to copy a 'nice look that you keep seeing everywhere'. However, as trends move on this leads to homes feeling dated and like they need another renovation (at least a small one) much earlier than you would want. But even if you're just swapping out a vanity, splashback tiles, or your tapware, this is all still unnecessary waste!
Instead we recommend taking time to think about each and every piece that goes into the home. Be intentional about selecting products, materials and finishes you truly love, and that you can enjoy for many years to come. If your home is designed so that it's a reflection of you and all the things you love, then it becomes timeless and won't ever feel dated to you.

The real cost of cheap
Another major issue is selecting pieces that don't stand the test of time. Even if they look the same as the more expensive piece, and you love the way it looks, chances are that the lower price means it comes with a hidden cost of a different kind. Most often this means issues with the products, either not working as they should, or the finish not lasting well. This leads to frustration and disappointment, time spent chasing up the supplier for answers, and eventually the expense of replacing them much sooner than you'd hoped.
However, beyond the financial, environmental and emotional cost of prioritising cheap, there's also the cost to your health. Cheaper products and materials are often made from cheaper materials too, which can be toxic and release VOCs. VOCs are Volatile Organic Compounds, which are chemicals that easily evaporate into the air you breath and can lead to many issues, from headaches, dizziness, and irritations, to cancer.
What does this mean for your project?
When designing for longevity, it's important to do your research to select pieces, finishes, and materials that you love, are well-made, and can be easily fixed or resurfaced:
Natural materials such as natural stone and solid timber are not only beautiful and timeless options, but they can be resurfaced as needed giving them a long lifespan.
Prioritise hardware, fittings and fixtures that are made from solid brass and properly finished. Cheaper options may have been hollowed out in order to use less material, and this can lead to cracking under pressure, corroding from the inside, or feeling flimsy and loosening over time. Cheaper options often also have thinner layers of the finish, which can lead to a higher chance of chipping.
Consider dealing with suppliers that offer long warranties and who have replacement parts should there ever be an issue (rather than throwing out the whole thing and replacing it with a new one!).
Invest in expert craftsmanship, and select high-quality and unique pieces that speak to you.
A home built on timeless design principles isn’t just about style, it’s about values. It’s about making intentional, informed choices that support your wellbeing, reduce waste, and bring long-term satisfaction. Your home is where your life unfolds - it deserves more than trends and fast interiors.
